Her One and Only: A Book Review
What do you get when you combine a star NFL player, his female bodyguard and the possibility of danger? Sparks, and lots of 'em!
I've been a huge fan of Becky Wade ever since I read A Love Like Ours. When I was offered the opportunity to review her latest and final book of the Porter Family series, Her One and Only, I jumped at the chance! Here's what you can look forward to:
Gray Fowler, star NFL tight end, is being pursued by a stalker, so his team hires a protection agency to keep Gray under the watch of a bodyguard at all times. When Gray meets Dru Porter, an agent assigned to him, he's indignant. How can an attractive young female half his size possibly protect him?
But Dru's a former Marine, an expert markswoman, and a black belt. She's also ferociously determined to uncover the identity of Gray's stalker. And she's just as determined to avoid any kind of romantic attachment between herself and the rugged football player with the mysterious past. But the closer they get to finding the stalker, the closer they grow to each other. As the danger rises, can Dru and Gray entrust their hearts--and their lives--to one another?
Dru's not your average meek and mild Christian heroine, her road to faith didn't come easy and she's got the past to prove it, making her a relatable character. Gray Fowler claims to be a Christian, but his play-boy lifestyle says otherwise. Dru's not afraid to tell him like it is and when she doesn't instantly succumb to the charm of his fame or the physical pleasure of his kisses Gray is forced to look at what real relationships are made of and decide if he's ready to man-up and put in the work they require.
Wade has once again created flawed and realistic characters that showcase the Lord's redemptive power. The anticipation of discovering Gray's stalker and the evident chemistry between him and Dru kept the story moving along for me, while the topic of infertility and miscarriage provided a tender vulnerability to an otherwise action-packed novel. Themes of trust, forgiveness and letting go run throughout the story, pointing readers back to God without being overly preachy. Wade has a way of subtly tackling the gray areas of faith and relationships, and addressing many of the questions and trials young women face today. I highly recommend any of her books!
